Artist in Residence

Picture
An artist residency is a program that invites artists to work on location for a set period -- this could be a gallery, horse show, or private venue. It provides artists with dedicated time and space to focus on their creative practice, explore new ideas, and produce artwork.

During an artist residency, I enjoy painting live for others to watch, ask questions, and be inspired by the creative process.  In addition to being a form of entertainment and inspiration, my resulting artwork may also reflect the venue's context and values.  In some cases, hosting an open studio, booth, or exhibition allows the attendees to engage with the residency, creating a sense of community and enhancing the venue's relationship with its audience.

Artist in Residence at Horse Shows

Picture
At horse shows, I have the ability set up my easel anywhere on the grounds to capture the behind-the-scenes warmup and sweet candid moments to the excitement of the Grand Prix ring.  As a lifelong equestrian with knowledge of horse anatomy, I am able to create paintings that are appealing to the show community and accurately reflect the horse's conformation.  Riders, owners, trainers and spectators may view my works-in-progress as I paint ringside from life, photographs I've taken, and photos from collaborating with the show's professional photographers.

Benefits of an Artist Residency at Horse Shows

An artist residency at a horse show provides the event management with opportunities for artistic collaboration, enhanced promotion, and a unique artistic perspective that adds value to the show and leaves a lasting impression on attendees.
  • Enhanced Atmosphere: The presence of an artist creating artwork adds an element of creativity and cultural enrichment to the horse show. It can elevate the overall atmosphere, making the event more engaging and memorable for attendees.
  • Documentation and Promotion: The work I create during the residency can serve as a form of documentation and promotion for the horse show. The artwork can be used for marketing materials, social media campaigns, and promotional materials, attracting attention and generating interest from potential attendees, sponsors, and media outlets.
  • Souvenirs and Merchandise: The artwork I make during the residency can be used to produce limited edition prints, merchandise, or souvenirs. These can be sold during the horse show, generating additional revenue for the event management while providing attendees with unique mementos.
  • Public Engagement: The presence of an artist in residence can create opportunities for public engagement and interaction. Attendees may have the chance to observe the artist at work, ask questions, and learn about the creative process. This engagement can foster a deeper connection between the audience and the horse show, enhancing their overall experience.
  • Long-term Legacy: The artwork created during the residency can leave a lasting legacy for the horse show. It can be exhibited in subsequent editions of the event, creating a tradition of art appreciation and contributing to its cultural heritage. The artwork can also be displayed in other venues or donated to relevant institutions, ensuring its continued visibility and impact.

Artist in Residence at Galleries and Private Venues

As the artist in residence at a gallery, club, or resort, I collaborate with the management to develop a program that benefits their community and provides the time for me to create new art -- whether it be a day, a week, a month, or an ongoing residency.

Special activities that may also be incorporated into the residency to engage the community include:
  • A gallery display or showing of completed works
  • An art reception with both framed work and the paintings / works-in-progress from the residency
  • Art classes for the community to attend hosted through my company, Corporate to Canvas
  • Private art lessons to create personalized artwork
  • Live streaming demonstrations of the work I'm creating, as well as tips and techniques
  • Co-painting hours to allow others to join the experience of painting on-location

BFree Studio Residency and Reception, February 2023

During my weeklong residency at BFree Studio in La Jolla, I painted daily from 11am-5pm and offered public events and activities.  I hosted a "Paint Your Pet's Portrait" class, co-painting hours, lessons, live streaming demos, and had the opportunity to work on 5 new oil paintings!  The week wrapped up with a reception of my framed art as well as the works-in-progress from my time in residency at the gallery.
